Butterflies are beautiful creatures. The colors and patterns on butterflies’ wings have made them the muse for many artistic creations. Butterfly jewelry is very popular and many women have an affinity for the gorgeous insect.

Besides jewelry created in the likeness of the butterfly there are also beautiful pieces that are actually made from the real wings of a butterfly. The iridescence of the colors on the wing creates a beautiful background or accent. The jewelry was first seen in about1920 and was popular through the 1950’s.

Butterfly jewelry was typically made from the wings of the Morpho butterfly. This butterfly was a stunning blue color and was often used to depict oceans and skies. The jewelry was created by painting the image in reverse on the back of the glass, with the glass then placed over the butterfly wing and inserted into a small frame.

Today jewelry made from butterfly wings is still available; it can be made from a variety of butterflies, but can be pricey with pieces averaging about a hundred dollars.
