Hip Hop Jewelry
Most hip hop artists spend a good deal of time talking
about the money they make and the “ice” they own. So what’s
the big deal with all the “ice”? In urban settings nice
cars, flashy jewelry, and expensive clothes are a way display status.
The more jewelry one owns the better off he is.
Some of the most common hip hop jewelry includes diamond stud earrings.
Urban males sport large studs as a symbol of wealth. Large pendants
on chains are another trend. First on the scene in the eighties, these
pendants are usually a cross, a dollar sign, and some other symbol or
letter made from gold, white gold, or platinum.
For most hip hop jewelry items it’s all about the sparkle, the
more gemstones (preferably diamonds) the better. Items like large watches
are covered in glistening stones. Not to mention the infamous grills.
Grills are fitted mouth pieces made of gold or platinum, encrusted in
gemstones. Grills were made popular by artists from the southern and
Midwestern states.
While hip hop jewelry is supposed to be eye catching, it is not supposed
to be cheap. Unfortunately cheap imitations are all over malls and the
internet, just hoping a young adult will be fooled into purchasing them.
Buyer beware, many items at prices too good to be true are usually just
that. Know about carats and karats before making major purchases.
