Sterling Jewelry
Silver is a soft metal, because of that it cannot be used
alone to create jewelry. Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and copper
or platinum. In order to be labeled sterling silver the alloy must be
at least 92.5% silver.
To determine if a piece is sterling use a jeweler’s loupe to examine
the jewelry for one of the following markings:
•Sterling
•Ster.
•925
•.925
If none of these markings are present then it is most likely made from
coin silver.
Silver may tarnish over time and can be protected against it by storing
in a fabric-lined container in a cool, dry place. Because of the copper
used in sterling jewelry the piece may patina, an oxidation process,
which will change the tone of the metal. Many people find the new hue
attractive but if the shiny silver color is desired chemical cleaners
can be used to remove the oxidation.
Because sterling jewelry is affordable many people can build a collection
of unique sterling pieces. Sterling is also a favorite among the jewelers
because of the cost and the ease of use. Taking good care of the silver
will ensure a great piece that can last for years.
